Panarea is the smallest of the Aeolian Islands. The small archipelago of islets that surround it (Basiluzzo, Dattilo, Lisca Bianca, Lisca Nera, le Formiche) were formed by an ancient and devastating volcanic explosion. Some say that in the dark shadows of the bay behind the island the inside of the ancient crater can be seen.
It is easy to visit the island on foot. The inhabited part, composed of the quarters of Drautto, San Pietro and Iditella is only a little over two kilometres long. Beautiful bays can be reached by land, such as Cala Junco, site of a prehistoric village and Calcara, with its pools of thermal waters. But to fully appreciate the beauty of the coast and the sea, at least one boat trip is suggested. The variety and the beauty of the sea floor make underwater explorations inviting.
There is an amazing footpath along the mountainside, which, for more experienced hikers, offers breathtaking views of all of the Aeolian Islands.
The elegance of the Aeolian architecture bestows a magical aura to the island. The pure white colour of its buildings is contrasted by the multicoloured enamel tile decorations, and the unfailing presence of pink and red bougainvilleas. The interlacing roads, too narrow for cars, makes the island one of a kind. (Guests can also take advantage of the silent and eco-friendly electric cars.)
For the vacationer who likes to shop, Panarea offers a large variety of high-quality products, in particular, clothing and furnishings. Lastly, the gastronomic aspect of the island is unforgettable. Cosy and charming restaurants serve dishes belonging to the flavourful Sicilian culinary tradition made contemporary and unusual due to different and unexpected influences.
